Conditions: 18 to 23 knots. Windy now. We’re surfing down waves consistently at 10 to 12 knots. Max speed in last 24 hours was 14.3 knots and 185 nautical miles. I think we’ll break a 200 mile day yet. Persons aboard: Two irresponsible adults. Fish count: Nada. Zilch. Nichts.
(Ben) Haven’t seen or talked to anyone from the outside world for a few days now. This ocean is huge and there’s no one here. About the worlds over-population issue. Let’s just build some floating islands. Solved.
True story: I’m writing in the logbook at three in the morning and suddenly notice a red light behind us. Another boat! I check radar. Nothing. So I take to the radio. “Vessel at zero six, seventeen degrees south. One zero nine, forty two degrees west. This is the sailing vessel NAHOA.” I repeat. I check again. The red light is now white. And it’s rising. Crap. It’s a star! I’m losing it.
The star scape is absolutely brilliant out here. You can see the milky way in all it’s glory. There are shooting stars. There are white stars. There are red stars. Occasionally we can spot a colored planet. It is absolutely breathtaking. And humbling. We humans are nothing but a spec of dust in this cosmos.
(Ash) Time zones. What the hell time is it anyways… The ipad says one thing, the computer another, the iphone yet another… some are on airplane mode others not, some adjust auto others not. So what the hell time is it. What month is it?
The trouble is that we are passing a few time zones on our way to the Marquesas. When I try and manually update the computer, there is no time zone for middle of the pacific ocean… But there is a timezone for Pitcairn island time, and central time, and moutain time, and pacific mexico time, and plain pacific time, and alaska time and some of these are the same exact time! I am so confused. We have given up and are starting our own time. Nahoa Time. We will start subtracting hours later this week. Until then, the sun keeps coming up later.
